Kambaku Safari Lodge | Kambaku Wildlife Reserve | Otjiwarongo - Namibia
I arrived at Kambaku Safari Lodge just after an incredible thunderstorm. Soaking wet grounds and puddles welcomed me as I walked into the reception. The smiles that met me said two things; “We are Namibian and we are happy that it has rained!” and “Welcome to our piece of paradise”.
I was quickly taken through the introductions so that I could meet up with Jonas & Bea who I had come to photograph during a horse ride session on the Kambaku Wildlife Reserve. My biggest concern was that my gear would get wet if it started raining while out on the horses. But then the team at Kambaku was well prepared. They had a guide and a 4×4 waiting for me. I joined the smiles. As much as I loved riding, I did not look forward to getting soaked.
Activities
Kambaku Horse Back Riding
Kambaku is a horse-riding destination of note. Horse-riding guests book into Kambaku for weeks, to come and ride on this reserve. From where I waited out with my guide, I could see that the horse-riding guide was very well-informed, knowledgeable and an excellent rider.
And not only are these horses very well-trained, but they are also stunning. I’m pretty sure I spotted an Appaloosa from Joseph’s Dream Stud close to Windhoek. They are just beautiful.
Kambaku Nature walk
I had the privilege to go on a nature walk the next morning after breakfast. Still soaked in the previous day’s rain, the veld was rejoicing. Wildlife was scarce, but the birds were chatting and chirping away. Our guide was also knowledgeable and tried to find the smaller details. Having done a lot of nature drives before, this was my first walk and I enjoyed getting up close and personal with nature.
It wasn’t long before we found the herd of giraffes, we saw the previous day with the horses. Again, the youngsters had a playful run and came close to investigating the humans.
Other activities
I saw quite a selection of mountain bikes at the lodge and a few bows. Kambaku Safari Lodge also has a rather impressive wooden playground for the littles and a volleyball court. For the more sophisticated guests, there is a spa and a wine cellar.
I think it is fair to say that Kambaku Safari Lodge caters for the young and old and offers a rather wide range of activities to keep everyone busy and happy.
Accommodation
Kambaku Safari Lodge has a selection of rooms to choose from. Standard, Luxury and Family Rooms offer something for everyone. There is also a second camp offering a closer-to-nature experience that I did not visit.
I stayed in a standard room and found the room spacious with all the amenities that I could need for a night.
Location
Kambaku Wildlife Rerserve is about 90km from Otjiwarongo. From the B1 between Otjiwarongo and Otavi, take the D2808 until you reach the gate to the reserve on your right.
Additional Info
Kambaku Safari Lodge offers game drives into the nearby Etosha National Park as well as day visits at the Thonningii Family Winery between Otavi and Grootfontein.
