Casper and Carolyn got married on the hottest day of the year. Maybe it was just the location, but it was hot! Beautiful, breathtaking, and very emotional, these two said their vows in the blazing sun of the Namib Desert.

While Sossusvlei is quite a trip, it is always worth it and I am so thankful that I could be part of their special day.

The story of Casper & Carolyn

This story is in my words, but they can tell it with a lot more flair and detail.

Carolyn and her then favourite travelling partner, her father, decided to explore Namibia on a self-drive holiday. They made turns in booking the next location and Swakopmund fell into Carolyn’s hands. Doing a bit of research, she found the most beautiful beach house in Langstrand on Booking Com and off they went.

The host of course was Casper himself. The friendliest host they have ever had.

Long story short, dear Carolyn returned for a longer stay and will now be staying forever just next door to her very first stay in Langstrand with her own personal host, Casper.

30 November 2024

Sossusvlei is an idylic location. There is no argument regarding this. But Sossusvlei in November is hot. And I don’t think we were quite prepared for the heat that welcomed us.

Sossusvlei Lodge Lodge is located just outside the gates to the park. Having stayed here before, I kind of knew what to expect from the venue itself.

Both Casper and Carolyn got dressed at the lodge. Carolyn in the honeymoon suite and Casper close by in one of the other suites.

The honeymoon suite is spacious, lots of natural light and yes, an air con that had to work really hard.

As always during a wedding day, the nerves were quite thin and I could see tension was building as the time of the ceremony kept being pushed later and later due to the incredible heat. Somehow, we managed to relax, laugh and drink lots and lots of water while we waited for the worst of the heat to subside.

When it was cool enough to set foot outside, I departed with Carolyn and her best friend to the outdoor venue. This was all a surprise and very strategically planned by Sossusvlei Lodge.

And then finally we get to go… we drive through the flatness of the Namib Desert into an area that reminds me of the Spitzkopppe. Out of nowhere, these rocky outcrops transform the landscape into an undiscovered wonderland.

We stop in the shade of one of these outcrops and I leave Carolyn behind to head towards the ceremony sight.

The vastness. The serenity of it all takes my breath away. And in the space of my breath, tears form. I look around and realise that I am not the only one touched by the landscape and the commitment that is about to follow.

As Carolyn and her dad walk across the landscape and Casper waits in the shade of the little arch, tears flow and smiles form.

This isn’t just two worlds coming together, this is love in the most beautiful landscape imaginable.
