Marissa Maternity Session | Documentary

Life.

I have written a lot about life and how I experience it. Yet, time and again it surprises me. It has sometimes felt like I have been at the wrong end of life – especially in the last year. I have decided, without praying, that I was going to stop my photography career and focus on something else. (That backfired spectacularly.)

A few weeks ago I photographed my first maternity session in a very long time. And it was so good to be with another family. A family with a toddler refusing to cooperate. A child that loves the camera. A father doing his best to look comfortable. And a highly uncomfortable, pregnant mommy, doing her best to get a family portrait. It felt so normal. As it should be. Just this weekend, I did another family session, and again, it was so good to just witness how all families have that one strong-willed child that does not give a damn about the family shoot. And I fell in love with my craft all over again. This is what I live for. This is what I love to capture. Not the perfect family, all polished and ready for church. No! Give me the raw deal. The real deal. That is what I want to capture. How it is.

Marissa, Francois – thank you for allowing me into your safe space and for letting me create these memories. Thank you for being my guinea pigs.

Now… let me get editing.

About Mariëtte

A documentarian at heart with a deep love for words, I find myself craving to create a world where my photography compliments my words and vice versa.

When I am not behind the camera, I am behind my laptop – creating. And when I am not creating – depending on the time of day – you can find me on our porch with a cup of coffee or a glass of Chenin blanc, chatting to the three boys in my life about everything from electromagnets to the swimming class of earlier in the day.

That’s me in a nutshell and I would love to be part of your story.
